- October 1963 US planes photographed nuclear missile sites in Cuba built by Soviet Union
- Kennedy met in secret w/ advisors for days
- after many meetings he decides to place a blockade around Cuba
- purpose was to prevent Soviets fro bringing more military supplies
- US demanded removal of missiles/deconstruction of sites
- Oct. 22 he spoke to the nation about the crisis
- everyone afraid of nuclear war
- agreed to dismantle the weapon sites in exchange for a pledge from the US not to invade Cuba
- missiles were removed
- Soviets escalated the building of military arsenal
- arms race continued
