• island hopping was the strategy used by the US to gain military bases and secure the small islands in the Pacific Ocean
• led my General MacArthur and Admiral Nimitz
• targeted islands that were not as strongly defended by the Japanese
• once they took control of the islands, they constructed landing strips and small military bases 
• strategy was costly-malaria, dysentery, and skin fungus broke out
• island hopping was successful
