The long debate over lowering the voting age in America from 21 to 18 began during World War II and intensified during the Vietnam War, when young men who were denied the right to vote were being conscripted to fight for their country. This case was made known to the public in a Oregan case in 1970 that had broken up the Supreme Court for many years before this . This amendment was made promptly in August of 1971, and even though the United States congress ratified it , our 31st president, Richard Nixon, signed it as a law.
