Cuban Missile Crisis

  • October 1963 US planes photographed nuclear missile sites in Cuba built by Soviet Union
  • Kennedy met in secret w/ advisors for days
  • after many meetings he decides to place a blockade around Cuba
  • purpose was to prevent Soviets fro bringing more military supplies
  • US demanded removal of missiles/deconstruction of sites
  • Oct. 22 he spoke to the nation about the crisis
  • everyone afraid of nuclear war
  • agreed to dismantle the weapon sites in exchange for a pledge from the US not to invade Cuba
  • missiles were removed
  • Soviets escalated the building of military arsenal
  • arms race continued
